Is it ok to eat spicy food and beans while breastfeeding?
Well I'm exclusively breastfeeding and just want to know if I can eat spicy food or beans..did you eat it ? If so did affect your baby

it's fine to eat spicy or hot food whilst pregnant or nursing, as long as you feel OK while you're eating it. And although a tiny fraction of what you ingest does go into your milk supply, it's unlikely that eating spicy food will affect your baby. Eating garlic may even be beneficial to breastfeeding. Two studies have shown that the infants of mothers who eat garlic tend to feed for a longer time, and many babies seem to prefer a variety of flavour in breast milk. Go by trial and error. If you suffer from heartburn after you've eaten a fiery curry, or your baby seems upset or irritable, then opt for a milder diet until she's slightly older. Women from parts of the world where spicy dishes are the cultural norm don't make big changes to their diet when they become pregnant or are nursing. The key is to stick to a healthy, varied diet, and avoid foods that make you feel uncomfortable.

Spicy food & Breastfeeding?
This may seem like a silly question but with all the things that DO transfer into breast milk... does spices from food as well? They say what you eat can alter the taste of breast milk but since I never tried it I cannot say for certain. You see I love spicy food. I REALLY love it. Problem is that my stomach has the worse problems the next day. I mean PAIN!!! It's lame because I am like addicted to the hottest stuff. Since I am eating things that are spicy to the point they SEEM spicer upon exit rather than entrance (TMI... i know) is it possible that this will upset my daughter's stomach as well? I can't help but think that when she is nursing. Anyway, I am going to try to mellow out for myself but I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of spicy flavor (EXTREME) passing through breast milk?

I never changed my diet, never avoided any foods, my babies never cared. Some babies may be more sensitive than others, but if you don't notice any discomfort in your daughter then there is no need to worry. And I find that as I get older, my desire for hot foods has increased, but my body tolerates them less. Bummer. I know if I have jalapenos I will pay for it "down the road".

1st time breastfeeding question about spicy food?
Its my first time breatfeeding and my mother in law says all the spicy food I want to eat will hurt the baby. Will it because honestly I love eating spicy food

Can nursing mothers eat strong-flavored or spicy foods? Yes, in general. There are many cultures who regularly eat spicy foods and strong-flavored foods, and there is no evidence that a greater percentage of these babies are fussy, gassy, or have other problems with the foods their moms eat. We do know that some strong flavors, like garlic, can pass into the milk but it does not seem to cause problems. In fact, one study showed that babies nursed better after mom ate garlic. http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html#spicy ------------------ A breastfeeding mother should try to eat a balanced diet, but neither needs to eat any special foods nor avoid certain foods. A breastfeeding mother does not need to drink milk in order to make milk. A breastfeeding mother does not need to avoid spicy foods, garlic, cabbage or alcohol. A breastfeeding mother should eat a normal healthful diet. Although there are situations when something the mother eats may affect the baby, this is unusual. Most commonly, "colic", "gassiness" and crying can be improved by changing breastfeeding techniques, rather than changing the mother's diet. http://www.kellymom.com/newman/12more_bf_myths.html#1

What food to eat while breastfeeding?
my wife is was wondering if she can eat hot/spicy foods while breastfeeding or does it have a higher chance to cause colic and such?

You can eat anything you want, however the healthier mom's diet the healthier mom will be (the composition of breastmilk mainly stays the same regardless of diet). However the kinds of fat in mom's diet does effect the kinds (not amount) of fat in her milk. However you should limit fish that are high in mercury (like albacore tuna) and breastfeeding women DO NOT NEED EXTRA IRON. You want to eat lots of iron rich foods -no problem. But don't force yourself to eat them. A "normal" women needs 18mg of iron per day, a pregnant woman needs 27mg, a lactating woman only needs 9mg per day until she resumes menstruation. http://parenting.ivillage.com/newborn/nbreastfeed/0,,3x86,00.html Garlic, in sufficient quantity, will alter the smell and taste of breastmilk. This peaks in intensity two hours following consumption. Though your expressed milk may have a pungent aroma, researchers have found that babies actually prefer garlic flavored mothers' milk! In one study, nursing moms were given either a placebo or a garlic capsule on the day of testing. It was found that the infants nursed longer, sucked more, and took in a larger quantity, when their mom's milk had the aroma and flavor of garlic (Mennella & Beauchamp, 1991). It has been hypothesized that the fetus has already been exposed to a variety of flavors and tastes while in utero (and the sense of taste is functional), so this taste may be quite familiar. In the United States we sometimes forget about nursing moms in other cultures. Indian moms who are nursing continue to enjoy their curries. Moms from Mexico will still eat their spicy dishes that are full of flavor. But we feel that while nursing we must adhere to a bland diet, and this is just not the case for most nursing moms. http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html Can nursing mothers eat strong-flavored or spicy foods? Yes, in general. There are many cultures who regularly eat spicy foods and strong-flavored foods, and there is no evidence that a greater percentage of these babies are fussy, gassy, or have other problems with the foods their moms eat. We do know that some strong flavors, like garlic, can pass into the milk but it does not seem to cause problems. In fact, one study showed that babies nursed better after mom ate garlic. Related information: Do you need to avoid garlic or spicy foods? by Debbi Donovan, IBCLC How will eating "gassy foods" affect baby? It is common for nursing moms to be warned away from eating the so-called "gassy foods" such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beans, etc. However, gassy foods have no more potential to affect your baby than other foods. Eating certain foods may cause gas in mom due to the normal breakdown of some of the undigested carbohydrates (sugar, starches, soluble fiber) by bacteria in the large intestine (see Gas in the digestive tract). However, breastmilk is made from what passes into mom's blood, not what is in her stomach or digestive track. Neither the gas nor the undigested carbohydrates (whose breakdown can cause gas in mom) pass into mom's blood, so it is impossible for these things to pass into your milk to make your baby gassy. This is not saying that your baby will not have a sensitivity to a certain food, but a food's potential to affect baby really has nothing to do with whether it makes mom gassy. See also My baby is gassy. Is this caused by something in my diet? @ Can acidic foods that mom eats be "too acid" for baby? No. Acidic foods like citrus, tomatoes, etc. can not change the acidity of breastmilk. Will too many sweets or increasing/decreasing fat in my diet affect breastmilk? No. Breastmilk is not affected by the amount of sugar that mom eats. In addition, the fat and calorie content of mom's milk is not affected by her diet. However, the kinds of fats in the milk can be changed (to a certain extent) via diet.
